This is a documentary series that explores Dani’s transition from male to female over the last several years. Beginning in 2017, Dani and I collaborated to make these documentations; her therapy appointments, laser hair removal, hormone replacement therapy, body changes, feminization surgery, and some in-between moments. This series discovers what makes our identity, what sets us free to be ourselves, and the constant struggle to fit into a polarizing society, mentally, emotionally, and physically.
The Walkers is a long-term documentary project (beginning in 2009) about a blended family living on a defunct farm in rural Indiana.
Centralia, PA caught on fire the summer of 1962. During a routine burning of the borough’s dump pit by the local firefighters, a piece of burning trash fell into a small vein in the ground, which led to a labyrinth of anthracite cole mines underneath. As of 2023, the population has dwindled from over 1,000 residents to just 4. The oxygen in the air is now a toxic mix of gases and the ground has begun to collapse in on itself. Centralia does not have a zip code, a waste removal service, or a police force.
I’ve been photographing Centralia since 2011, documenting the surface of the Earth in relationship to the on-going fire’s damage. In some areas, the ground is split open and hot steam pours out, smelling of sulfur. In other areas, there are mounds of anthracite coal and haunting phrases scrawled across the abandoned roads.
The photographs in this series create a dialogue around the helplessness of the community, the disastrous effects of the government’s neglect, and the battle between the fire and the unrelenting power of Mother Nature.
These images are of Sidney, NY and the people who live there. Sidney is a small town along the Susquehanna River that has suffered through two floods recently (2006 and 2011). Since then, the town has been trying (and failing) to move its affected residents to dry land.
